Gene site found for children's food allergy

Gene linked to eosinophilic esophagitis plays key role in inflammation

Pediatrics researchers have identified the first major gene location responsible for a severe, often painful type of food allergy called eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). In this disease, which may cause weight loss, vomiting, heartburn and swallowing difficulties, a patient may be unable to eat a wide variety of foods.

After performing a genome-wide association study, the study team found EoE was linked to a region of chromosome 5 that includes two genes. The likely culprit is the gene TSLP, which has higher activity levels in children with EoE compared to healthy subjects. In addition, TSLP has been previously linked to allergic inflammatory diseases, such as asthma and the skin inflammation, atopic dermatitis.  Read more...

Five things that upset kids about their parents

Gregory Ramey, Ph.D.
While the facts indicate the American kids are growing up in the safest time in history, it just doesn’t feel that way to most parents. Kids resent being over supervised and under respected. They want their parents to lighten up and allow them to experience life and learn how to independently deal with problems.

  1. Lack of attention.
  2. Inconsistency.
  3. Rules without reasons.
  4. Personal parental problems.
  5. Over protectiveness.

Arab Youth Consider Themselves Global Citizens

http://www.injazalarab.org/images/spot-02.jpgMost Arab youth seek harmonious relations with the international community and consider themselves global citizens, says the second Annual ASDA’A Burson-Marsteller Arab Youth Survey, a study of 2,000 Arab national and expatriate youth between the ages of 18 and 24 across nine Middle East countries.

Among a variety of topics, the survey polled Arab youth to rate the importance of global citizenship – the shared feeling of identity regardless of ethnic, religious or national background – with seven out of ten respondents interviewed describing the concept as either ‘somewhat’ or ‘very important’.  Read more...

Are uneducated youth a greater threat to U.S. than terrorism?

http://www.jlcauvin.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/large_CoryBooker.jpg
Working with youth should be a top priority for any city, says Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker, who was in town as the featured speaker at the monthly Westminster Presbyterian Church Town Hall Forum February 25 in downtown Minneapolis.

Before being elected mayor in 2006, Booker served as an attorney for a local urban justice organization and a city councilman. He once lived in a housing project “and learned more than from any undergraduate or graduate program,” admitted Booker, who holds two degrees from Stanford University and is a Rhodes Scholar and Yale Law School graduate.  Read more...

Antiabortion activists see a racial conspiracy

BillboardA joint effort of Georgia Right to Life and the pro-adoption, pro-abstinence Radiance Foundation, the campaign ostensibly calls attention to the fact that black women have a disproportionately high number of abortions. But there is a deeper, more disturbing claim at work as well.

An increasingly vocal segment of the antiabortion community has embraced the idea that black women are targeted for abortion in an effort to keep the black population down.

The billboards direct people to a website called toomanyaborted.com, which claims that "Under the false liberty of 'reproductive freedom' we are killing our very future."  Read more...

Doc: Children Feel Weight Of Recession

Dr. Alvin Poussaint of the Harvard Medical School told Bob Schieffer on CBS’ "Face the Nation" Sunday that children are being disproportionately affected by the recession.

"Children need to feel safe, secure and protected. And the economic downturn makes them feel the opposite, and they can see it in their own families or in the families of their friends," Poussaint said.

He added that children "go to school. They hear about people losing their jobs. They know that things have had to be cut back in their own homes, so I think they're feeling a lot of tension."  Read more...

Recession Leaves Many Children Uninsured

By Kelly Cobiella

One safety net is supposed to be the federally funded CHIP program, recently reauthorized by President Obama. But of the estimated 8 million children currently uninsured, CHIP is expected to cover only half. Finding out whether your kids are eligible can be complicated - and time consuming. Dr. Redlener says, kids can't wait.

"For children, a temporary loss of access to health care can have lifelong consequences," Redlener said. "Because, in that absence, we may miss something very critical to a developing child."  Read more...

Toothache for Children of the Recession

By Cynthia Bowers

It's estimated that some 12 million children face serious barriers to dental care, involving either high cost or lack of dental insurance.

"If there's nothing left at the end of the day, health care is what suffers the most," said Shelley Bolton who attended the clinic.

Clinics like the one in La Crosse help. But in this economy, with folks struggling just to put food on the table and pay their mortgages, a trip to the dentist is often the first thing to go.

In fact, a recent survey found 36 percent of Americans have cut back on regular visits because of the cost.   Read more...

Study: Teen Use of Alcohol, Pot Climbing

Increase Reverses Decade-Long Decline; 39% of High School Students Drink, 25% Smoke Marijuana

"I'm a little worried that we may be seeing the leading edge of a trend here," said Sean Clarkin, director of strategy at The Partnership for a Drug-Free America, which was releasing the study. "Historically, you do see the increase in recreational drugs before you see increases in some of the harder drugs."

The annual survey found the number of teens in grades 9 through 12 who reported drinking alcohol in the last month rose 11 percent last year, with 39 percent — about 6.5 million teens — reporting alcohol use. That's up from 35 percent, or about 5.8 million teens, in 2008.

For pot, 25 percent of teens reported smoking marijuana in the last month, up from 19 percent.  Read more…
